About
Wolfgang Tschapeller is an architect based in Vienna. Born in Dölsach, East Tyrol, he was initially trained as a carpenter and later studied architecture at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and at Cornell University in New York State. Wolfgang Tschapeller has taught as a visiting professor at Cornell University, the University of Art and Design in Linz, Austria, and the State University of New York at Buffalo, among other academic institutions. In 2004 - 2005, he was a McHale Fellow at the State University of New York at Buffalo. From 2005 to 2023, he is Professor of Architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and from 2012 to 2023, he was the Director of the IKA, the Institute for Art and Architecture at the Academy.
Major projects include the BVA 1 to 4 series, the design for a guesthouse in the garden of the Schwarzenberg Palace in Vienna, the project for a European Cultural Center between the Palatine Chapel and the City Hall in Aachen, the administrative building of the municipality in Murau, Austria, the St. Joseph House, the project for the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, the Center for the Promotion of Science in Belgrade, and the Mui Ho Fine Arts Library at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York State.
The projects of Wolfgang Tschapeller ZT-GmbH have been exhibited at the Oris House of Architecture in Zagreb in 2017; at the Architecture Biennale in Venice in 2012, 2010, 2006, and 2004; at the Austrian Pavilion of the Architecture Biennale in Venice in 2012; at the exhibition New Trends of Architecture in Europe and Asia-Pacific in Tokyo in 2008; as part of the exhibition Sculptural Architecture in Austria in Istanbul in 2010; at the National Art Museum of China in 2006; at the Aedes East Gallery in 2006; at the Aedes West Gallery in 2004; and at the Architecture Biennale in São Paulo in 2003.
Wolfgang Tschapeller ZT GmbH was founded in 2007 with Wolfgang Tschapeller as its principal. In 2012 the branch office Wolfgang Tschapeller ZT GmbH Belgrade was opened. In March 2020 Wolfgang Tschapeller ZT GmbH was transformed into Wolfgang Tschapeller Architects.
In 2020, the EUROPEAN PRIZE FOR ARCHITECTURE was awarded to Wolfgang Tschapeller.
